4 Historical spots in Santorini

Welcome to the Aegean Sea; the wild volcanic sculptures with the simple Cycladic lines make Santorini one of the most popular destinations in Greece. Santorini is an island of Cyclades and I suppose that if Ian Lancaster Fleminghad been immortal, perhaps he would be living in Santorini today…….

Having felt the adrenaline of the island in its entire splendor, ready to explode, we thought we would share our favorite adventure spots with y'all.

1) Akrotiri, the "Pompeii of the Aegean"

Breaths under its bioclimatic roof: it is Akrotiri, the "Pompeii of the Aegean". Apart from a high standard holiday, Santorini will also make you enjoy rare trips in history. Walk and experience one of the most important cultures of the Aegean, covered by the ash of the great volcanic eruption in 1600 BC. Visit the Prehistoric Thira Museum in Fira to see the frescoes of "Spring", "Monkeys", "Afrikanos". A world "frozen" in time welcomes you. Discover its charm….

2) The medieval capital

From Fira and Imerovigli, admire the imposing cone rock of Skarou, which is 330 meters above sea level. Here you will discover the medieval capital of Santorini. Explore the Venetian castle with houses, temples, the command and the residences of the rulers. Climb to the top and all the Caldera from Oia to Fira will be revealed in front of you - an unrealistic "virtual reality" experience.

3) Santorini's Seabed

Diving in volcanic seabed will be an extraordinary experience for you, as you will discover things beyond imagination.

Mapping, for the first time, of the active underwater cracks around Santorini was carried out by a research team with the participation of Greek and American scientists. Analyzing the data gathered two years ago by a research vessel, scientists unveiled the enchanting Santorini floor full of typical volcanic cones and underwater terraces. They are based on the processing of data collected by the oceanographic ship Marcus Langseth (the world's largest traveler from America for this purpose) in 2015 under the Proteus research program.

Thanks to the ultra-modern equipment of the oceanographic ship, a high-resolution mapping of the bottom was made. The new scientific work concerns the basin west of the Christians (islands in the southwest of Akrotiri) up to the Amorgos basin. High-resolution mapping of the bottom gave many new elements. "In the area between Santorini and Amorgos we found two underwater landslides, probably linked to the 1956 earthquake (7.4 Richter, at the Amorgos fault) and to the tsunami generation. These data are important for tsunami scientists because they can use them to understand the mechanism of generating a tsunami.

As it turns out, volcanic activity is concentrated in the area of the Kolumbo volcano (located in the basin of the island of Anhidros, northwest of Santorini). The bottom around Santorini presents an impressive picture. "The analysis of the topography of the bottom revealed submarine" stairs ", like the terraces that exist in the Cyclades. Their systematic study will tell us if they were created with the gradual deposition of material from the volcano or deformation of the bottom and volcanic landslides from the great eruption of the Minoan era.

Therefore, try to explore and dive into the mysterious seabed of Santorini: from the cape of Tripiti of Thirassia to Taxiarchis with the shipwreck, Old Kameni, the reef of Adiabatis, the caves at Mesa Pigadia and the "Indian" rock in Akrotiri. Discover the charm of a different world from another era……

4) Stroll through the volcano of Nea Kameni

Red and black rocks in a wild landscape around the crater will come to life in front of you. Discover a volcano with a history of 2.5 million years and opposite the Caldera villages. The myth wants Santorini to be the lost Atlantis - the state that sank 9,500 years ago – transmits its magic in front of your eyes.
